On September 7th, Brandeis International Business School will host its first in-person alumni panel of the school year and we encourage you to attend!

About the Panel

Learn the ins and out of a career in Asset Management from experienced alumni in the field. This panel is a must for all students interested in a career in finance, especially those who want to better understand the business of investing and portfolio management or pursue it as a career path.

Moderated by Professor of Finance Anna Scherbina, this panel will cover the breadth of roles within the Asset Management field as well as career preparedness and job search advice. Whether you want to work on the buy side or sell side, become a research or quantitative analyst, specialize in risk or performance analytics or try your hand at trading and managing a portfolio, this panel will help you understand the many opportunities available.

Joram Cukierman ’98, MA’99, Portfolio Lead, Citadel 

Joram Cukierman is a Portfolio Lead at Citadel Energy Marketing focusing on delivering structured credit and commodity solutions to corporates. Previously, Joram spent 10 years at Goldman Sachs, most recently as the head of US Power, Renewables, Environmental Products Sales. Over his 20+year career in commodities he has worked for Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch, Allegheny Energy, and Noble Group. He graduated from Brandeis University in 1998 and received an MA in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis International Business school in 1999.

David Magid ’08, Director, Kennedy Lewis Investment Management

David Magid is a Director at Kennedy Lewis, a $10 billion AuM opportunistic credit manager, where he is responsible for sourcing and managing investments across public and private markets, primarily in the Industrials sector. Mr. Magid was formerly a Senior Vice President at York Capital from 2013 to 2020, where he was focused on special situation and distressed investments. Mr. Magid began his career as an investment banking analyst at Credit Suisse in the Leveraged Finance Origination & Restructuring and Debt Capital Markets Groups. Mr. Magid received a BA in Economics and Politics from Brandeis University and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

Pia McCusker, MSF’00, Senior Managing Director – Global Head of Cash Management, State Street Global Advisors

Pia McCusker is a Senior Managing Director and the Global Head of Cash Management at State Street Global Advisors (SSGA). In this role, she manages a team of investment professionals, including portfolio managers, traders and credit analysts globally with about $450 billion in assets under management across all Cash strategies. Pia is a member of the firm’s Senior Leadership Team and has over 20 years of credit and investments experience. In addition, she chairs State Street Global Advisor’s Independent Fiduciary Committee and is a member of the North America Valuation Committee, Liquidity Risk Committee, Securities Lending Committee, and Diversity and Inclusion Council. Previously, Pia was the Head of Global Credit Research for SSGA where she led a team of credit analysts who provided global research coverage of the investment-grade corporate, asset-backed markets, financial institutions including banks, broker/dealers, finance companies for short-duration/enhanced cash, securities lending reinvestment and traditional cash portfolios. Pia holds a BA in Economics and in American Studies from Brandeis University, as well as an MS in Finance also from Brandeis University.

Deborah Shufrin ’93, Chief Investment Officer, Colby College

Deborah Shufrin is Chief Investment Officer at Colby College. With responsibility for Colby’s $1-billion investment portfolio, she oversees the College’s investment team and the strategic allocation of Colby’s investments, working closely with the College’s Board of Trustees Portfolio Investment Committee, Colby’s president, and its chief financial officer. Prior to Colby, Deb was Director of Investments at Brandeis University. In her decade at the university, the Brandeis endowment nearly doubled, from $620 million in 2010 to $1.1 billion in 2020, well above the national average increase. A summa cum laude graduate of Brandeis, Shufrin holds an M.B.A. from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the university, she was a senior vice president at the economic development research organization Initiative for a Competitive Inner City. Earlier in her career, she was a director and mezzanine analyst for Hancock Capital Management in Boston, an analyst for MFS Investment Management and Morgan Stanley in New York, and a member of then-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s cabinet as director and chief of staff for the Department of Business and Technology.
