As an international student at Brandeis International Business School, the journey thus far has been truly transformative. Despite my engineering background and aspirations to pursue a career in quantitative finance, the resources and opportunities provided by the business school have been nothing short of extraordinary.
The past year has been a whirlwind of growth, self-discovery, and career development, propelling me far beyond my initial expectations. While the path has been challenging, the unwavering support and invaluable resources offered by Brandeis have been instrumental in shaping my trajectory. From interactive workshops to insightful alumni sessions, these experiences have left an indelible mark, empowering me to navigate the intricacies of the finance industry with confidence.
As I reflect on this incredible first year, a few standout resources have proven to be particularly impactful, laying the foundation for my future endeavors.
Launching Your Global Career Course with my Career Coach
As an international student, navigating the nuances of a new work culture and comprehending the preferences of a foreign job market can be a daunting challenge. The United States job market not only demands exceptional technical skills but also the ability to market oneself effectively in a highly competitive environment.
One of the critical aspects of the course was the introduction to the STAR Method. This technique empowered me to craft compelling narratives that showcased my strengths and achievements, increasing my chances of making a lasting impression on potential employers.
Furthermore, the course provided invaluable insights into crafting impactful resumes and cover letters, ensuring that my application materials effectively conveyed my unique value proposition. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of mastering the art of small talk.
Complementing these practical skills, the course recommended insightful resources like the book “2-Hour Job Search,” which offered strategies for optimizing job search efforts and leveraging networking opportunities effectively.
As a two-credit course, it served as a comprehensive guideline on navigating the intricacies of the job search process. In my case, as I was still exploring the best fit within the finance sector, this course provided me with a valuable edge, equipping me with the knowledge and tools to approach different finance industries strategically and effectively.

Marquee Group Financial Modeling – Training the Street
The Marquee Group Financial Modeling course through Training the Street proved to be an invaluable experience that propelled my career forward. Despite not having a finance background, this intensive program equipped me with crucial financial modeling skills, particularly in leveraged buyout (LBO) and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) modeling.
Earning certifications in these areas not only bolstered my credibility but also provided me with a competitive edge in the finance industry. The course’s efficient and practical approach to modeling taught me how to analyze and present financial data effectively, a skill that is indispensable in today’s data-driven business landscape.

The class proved to be an immersive experience, delving deep into the intricacies of leveraged buyout (LBO) modeling and analysis. Beyond the theoretical knowledge, we had the invaluable opportunity to connect with professionals actively working in the private equity space.

The interactive nature of the class fostered an environment conducive to active learning, encouraging us to ask probing questions and participate in thought-provoking discussions.
Brandeis Social Events
The social events at Brandeis, such as the MSF Mixer and Odyssey Cruise, played a pivotal role in my journey by facilitating connections with fellow Brandeisians, staff, and faculty members. These events provided a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere where I could interact with people on a personal level, fostering meaningful relationships that extended beyond the classroom.
Through these interactions, I gained access to a wealth of knowledge and guidance from individuals who genuinely understood my aspirations and could offer valuable advice tailored to my career goals. Moreover, these events served as another opportunity for me to practice my small talk and networking skills, which are essential in building professional connections.
Moreover, these events allowed me to appreciate the multifaceted personalities of those around me, enabling me to forge deeper connections based on shared interests and experiences. Ultimately, these light-hearted gatherings not only enriched my social life but also opened doors to invaluable mentorship and guidance that proved instrumental in shaping my professional path.
As I embark on the summer, I am excited to engage in personalized coaching sessions with my dedicated career coach. These one-on-one sessions will be invaluable in refining my strategy and honing my approach to effectively navigate the competitive landscape of quantitative finance.
