The CSE hosted some great Industry Treks this fall, including visits to Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, BNP Paribas, Wayfair, London Economics International and AEW Capital Management.
Now that the semester is winding down, we asked students who attended this year’s New York City Finance Industry Trek to share a single piece of advice with future trekkers to maximize the experience.
“My advice for future students is to be genuinely curious and start real conversations,” says a second-year MSBA student. “Don’t just listen, but ask thoughtful questions, connect with alumni, and follow up afterward. Those small moments of authentic connection can open doors you never expected.”

Prepare Thoroughly
The most common advice was to research companies and panelists ahead of time so you can ask insightful, targeted questions. As one student put it: “Time flies during these meetings, and everyone wants to participate during the Q&A session, so having your questions prepared in advance will help you truly take advantage of this incredible time.” Another student pointed out that researching alumni and recruiting processes ahead of time will not only help you ask more relevant questions, but also help you stand out!
Present Yourself Professionally
Many students stressed the importance of acting professionally. This includes dressing formally, arriving on time, and sharpening your pitch and communication skills. CSE staff, company hosts and fellow students put a lot of work into these visits. Approach them with a professional mindset to help everyone get the most out of the experience.
Engage Actively
Be curious, ask thoughtful questions (even basic ones), and participate genuinely in conversations. “Don’t be shy—alumni are eager to help,” says one of our MA students. Another student recommended maintaining a confident, relaxed and respectful demeanor when chatting with alumni at events.
Network Intentionally
Build real connections, follow up afterward with a thank-you note and maintain a strong LinkedIn presence. As one student put it: “Your network is your net worth.” Treks create the opportunity to network with alumni and employers in the field. These connections can be invaluable as you start your own career.
Push Your Comfort Zone
As one student suggests: “Get out of your comfort zone and show your authentic self out there. Explore and get motivated!” Another student says to “keep an open mind” during company visits. In other words, show up, explore, take initiative and use every opportunity to learn and grow.

Industry Treks are great experiences when you take them seriously. Make the most out of your time by following your peers’ advice: Prepare, research, be professional, keep an open mind and follow up appropriately after each visit in order to explore new career paths and network with alumni and employers in the field!
