Each Tuesday, the CSE Connect “Top Interviewing Questions Series” will highlight a different question from the CSE Top Interviewing Questions Guide, detailing 1) How the question is typically asked, 2) Why interviewers tend to ask the question and what the interviewer is looking for when asking the question, and 3) Tips for a successful response.
This week’s question is : “Where do you see yourself in five years?”
How the Question is Typically Asked/Common Variations
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
- What are your career goals?
Why Do Interviewers Ask/What are their Expectations
The interviewer wants to know that you have goals and that this position is a good fit for your long-term planning. They want to confirm that you are committed to the company if they hire you and that you envision a career path that involves the company.
Tips for Success
Keep your answer fairly general, especially if you do not know about the typical career path within the company.
Key is to stress your interest in a long term relationship with the company (especially if you have a history of experiences that are shorter than a year)
